![]() ![]() ![]() Here are the technical details of the Victoria Falls. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, the Victoria Falls are classified as the largest, based on its combined width and height resulting in the world's largest sheet of falling water. How was the largest waterfall on earth formed formed?Ĭheck out this short but informative video from a Wild Horizons tour guide on how the Victoria Falls were formed. The elevation at Victoria Falls which is the approximate midpoint of the Zambezi is 889m/2917ft above sea level. The Waterfall is on the mighty Zambezi River, the fourth-longest river in Africa which flows for 2,574 kilometres (1,599 mi) from Mwinilunga District in northwest Zambia (elevation 1461m/4793ft above sea level) through six countries to the Indian Ocean in Mozambique. Which River flows over the Victoria Falls? ![]() The Victoria Falls are located in Southern Africa on the border of Zambia (the closest town is Livingstone) and Zimbabwe (the closest town is Victoria Falls). The name Victoria Falls was originated only much later by David Livingstone, a Scottish physician, missionary, and the first European explorer to set foot at the falls in November 1855. I do get that tourists bring money to attractions like this but the price difference is excessively high to those who hold foreign passports. The original names given to the falls are:- Mosi-oa-Tunya, in Lozi, a local language, which means " The Smoke that Thunders" and, Shungu Namutitima in Tonga, another local language meaning " Boiling Water". The entry fees are US7 for locals and US30 for internationals. We went in the afternoon, the weather was great and there were no queues and the staff were pleasant.Įveryone is expected to pay entry fees and the staff insist on seeing identification documents. There are about 9 or 10 viewing stations all offering different angles. They have also made sure that the vegetation and trees beyond the barriers are cut back to allow for a great view of the falls. The walkways are made of durable tar and stone, they are well maintained with no over growth. The people responsible for this park have clearly made an effort to maintain the surroundings. Some people choose to use a guide, we didn’t, it’s easy to find your way around. I have been here before and every time I visit, I am blown away by the sight. Now that restrictions have been lifted, people travel from all corners of the world to see it. You can end your walk by having lunch or a drink at the Lookout Cafe or at the Hotel Victoria Falls (for high tea). (Either bring a waterproof camera or wrap your camera in plastic.) The rainbows are stunning, and as you walk, including on the suspended bridge, you get a different experience of the falls. Our guide also provided rain ponchos, but we got completely soaked from the dramatic spray and mist of the falls, which shift depending on wind. On the walk, we learned a lot about the cultural history of the falls, which included indigenous and scientific knowledges. We booked through the tour guide Off2Africa, who contracted out Bushtracks Africa, both highly recommended. ![]() The guide picked us up at our hotel, helped us with crossing borders, paying for park entrance fees, safeguarding items in a locked van, taking photos, and even offering advice for negotiating for things to purchase at the market located just outside the entrance of the park. Recommended also is a guided walk on the Zambian side. There is a clearly marked 2 km walk in the national park in Zimbabwe (see my review of the park in a different post). We recommend going on a guided or your own walk on BOTH SIDES of the falls to really get a sense of the size and drama of the falls. Victoria Falls is one of our world's most beautiful and breathtaking natural wonders of the world! You will hear the sound of the falls and feel the mist before seeing the falls themselves. ![]()
